    Charity presentations- £2,100 each

The choir’s 80th anniversary celebrations included a concert last October at Southwell Minster featuring four male voice choirs and the Ravenshead Swing Band which raised funds for two charities, Hetty’s and Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes. The wonderful concert to an audience of over 450 resulted in a recent cheque presentation to each of the charities for £1,631.41 in addtion to the £957 they shared from raffle proceeds on the night.

The two photographs show Choir Chairman Geoff hursthouse (left) and President David Marriott (right) presenting to Tracey Crosby of Hetty’s and Carl Foulstone and John McFadden (next to David) the Chairman of the Notts Blood Bikes at the choir’s rehearsal for a Christmas concert at St. Philip Neri Church.

Trinity Methodist rings with music, laughter, love and commitment.

This concert had been some time in preparation, particularly for our friends at Trinity Methodist Church in Mansfield Woodhouse. Adele Stenton of our Supporters’ Group and Steve Cree, Baritone, were at the heart of the effort to stage this concert. The church was decorated magnificently with Remembrance poppies and forest oak leaves through the work of the church “Knit and “Natter” group led by Adele and the logistics arrangements by Steve (a church worship leader) were faultless.

The photographs show commemorative displays for the choir’s 80th anniversary year representing love and commitment. The poppy sign in Woodhouse High Street, arranged by the church, supports our commitment to Remembrance and we are most grateful for the kindness of the church in supporting our anniversary. We presented the painting of the poppies done by Mr. Phil Millns, Bass, to the church is recognition and thanks.

The capacity audience was thoroughly entertained not only by the choir’s professional and enthusiastic presentation but also by five soloists, (Mario Curtis, Phil Donovan and Martyn Hopkinson from the 2nd tenor section, Dan Hayes, 1st tenor and Peter Baugh, Baritone) three of whom had never done a solo before; all gave of their best. The songs they performed were:-

Mario – She’s got a way (Billy Joel)
Peter – Let it be me (Gilbert Becaud)
Dan Hayes – Abide with me (Lyte)
Phil – Something – (George Harrison)
Martyn – I cant’ help falling in love (Elvis Presley)

The GentleMen (eight of the choir members who sing together as an ensemble) also sang two songs (Uptown Girl and You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling) which gave contrast to the choir programme.

It is amazing how the choral classics of Morte Criste, My Lord What a Morning and Calon Lan inspire the most passion in our choristers, and you could see the impact and pleasure on the faces of the uplifted audience as these beautiful songs were performed.

I must mention the formidable direction the choir enjoys under of Mr. Ian Grice who doesn’t miss a note, an intonation, a dynamic and never fails to inspire in us the best we can deliver. Maureen Lockwood accompanied with skill and delicacy, not only the choir pieces but each of the soloists; this takes dedication and care and we are lucky to have her with us.
Finally, I must mention the wonderful entertaining style of the compere for the evening Mr. Paul Bennett (2nd Tenor). You never know what he is going to say, but he made us all laugh, introduced the performers with aplomb and beautifully linked the together the whole evening. The audience were delighted with his silky-smooth humour and dignity. Well done Paul and thank you.

I leave the last comment to Adele who says “It was wonderful to have both my Trinity family and my choir family together. So many fantastic comments about the special atmosphere of Trinity from people who have never been in before. Once more the place was alive with music and laughter.”

  • Choirs at Clipstone – A Choral Kaleidoscope

Choirs at Clipstone – A Choral Kaleidoscope

As part of our 80th Anniversary celebrations we were pleased to be performing once again with the Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir. This is a return match after we performed with them and four other Derbyshire choirs in Derby Cathedral last summer and it was a truly uplifting experience.
The opportunity to hear these two choirs together was enhanced by the fact that some of the songs performed by Mansfield & DMVC were previews of those to be sung by the Mansfield Choir at The Royal Albert Hall, London on 27th April. Our Mansfield choir is delighted to be selected for the fourth time as one of only three English choirs to perform at The Festival of Massed Male Voices comprising 650 choristers from 23 choirs: an honour indeed.

The two male voice choirs were ably contrasted by Sempre (Italian for “Always”) who are six ladies, all friends, who just love singing. Last year they celebrated 30 years together and their talent shows through, no pretentious antics, no stage hugging, just honest, characterful and well delivered harmonies and complex arrangements which delight their audiences every time they perform.

The programme for the evening was most diverse, ranging from songs by Ed Sheeran, Smokey Robinson, Welsh pieces, and classic male voice standards- a true kaleidoscope of music, and it is this variety of entertainment which keeps our audiences returning. Perfect (the Ed Sheeran song) was arranged by Louise Buxton the talented accompanist for the Derbyshire choir and represents the best in modern music which all male choirs now include in their repertoire. We provided contrast with “Ar Hyd Y Nos”, “Yfory” and “Gweddi Affricanaidd” (African Prayer) as did Sempre with a brilliant arrangement of “Pie Jesu” and my favourite of the evening “A Night Like This”.

Jonathan Baker of A W Lymn (The family funeral service), as a mark of congratulation and for our support in some of their services, presented us with tie clips which commemorate our 80-year history.

The logo was designed, and the tie clips sourced, by Kelly Grey, owner of Huntress Promotional Merchandise and they look really good, shining against our choir ties. Jonathan was most professional and compassionate about the choir’s continuous contribution to wellbeing in our community and that it is these values which mirror the objectives of A W Lymm in their business – a symbiotic relationship. Many thanks to Kelly and Jonathan for their support and involvement.

L to R: Jonathan Baker, Geoff Hursthouse (Choir Chairman), Kelly Grey, Geoff Mansfield (Publicity Officer), David Marriott, Choir president).

To his great surprise, during the evening, Keith Turner was presented with a certificate in celebration of 20 years’ membership and involvement in the choir. Keith is a staunch baritone and can always be relied upon for a kind word, friendliness and commitment to performance. We greatly value his involvement together with his wife Mary who is always active in our choir Supporters’ Group.

Our thanks must also go to our choir President, Mr. David Marriott and his church team at All Saints Church, Clipstone., The church is a super concert venue and we are always made most welcome by the congregation and the stalwart helpers who work hard to make the concerts a success. The behind-the-scenes workers in our Supporters’ Group, Concert and Publicity managers and Treasury all warrant thanks.

I can’t finish this piece without mentioning the passionate (I really mean this) leadership of Ian Grice, our Musical Director. Supported by both Margaret and Maureen our accompanists, we would not have the choir we have today without their never ending preparation and attention to detail. Facebook reports, what’s app messages, verbal acclamation all stem from Ian’s guidance and total commitment – we love it Ian and long may it continue.

We, of course, love performing, and this continued at the afterglow in Clipstone Welfare where both male choirs gave even more to round off the event. There is no better way to spend a Saturday evening. – fabulous.
