    Tom Dillon – 100th Birthday

Mr. Thomas Dillon has reached his 100th birthday and members of the choir visited the house of his daughter Maureen and her husband John, to pay tribute to the most gentle, unassuming, friendly and humble “father of the choir”.

Stout Hearted Men was one of the first songs he learned and he delighted in joining in with the singing and especially enjoyed the festive “Deck the Hall”.
Tommy was a second tenor in our choir from 1978 to 2019; 42 active years and he served as Assistant Librarian for 1982 and 1983 then as Librarian between 1984 and 2002. A family man with strong Christian beliefs, Tom was always ready to contribute the choir’s organisation and social activities. He was a central feature of a film we made in 2014 in which he expressed his joy and pleasure in belonging to our choir family.

Maureen was surprised at the large number of members that turned out to sing for Tom, some of whom didn’t know him as they are recent new recruits; such is the respect in which he is held.
The tea, coffee and birthday cake kindly offered by Maureen and John were met with enthusiasm as was the good wishes for Tom with a promise to return next year.

Congratulations Tom and well done! A true legend.

  • Debutantes

    Debutantes

It is always a pleasure to welcome new members into our choir. This photograph shows Justin and Mick who have recently had their debut within two choirs.

Justin Agah-Gilbert (left in the photograph) has joined our Bass section and has very quickly integrated into the life and work of the choir. Along with Sally and the boys (Lucas and Nathaniel) they just love being involved not only for the pleasure Justin derives form membership but also form the social and “family feeling” we try to encourage and which is clearly appreciated. Justin has a fine Bass voice, a winning smile and his work and learning rate has been wonderful to see and hear – such enthusiasm. He made his debut at our concert with the Mastersingers at St. John’s church, Mansfield on 9th September 2023. Welcome!

Mick Tunney has been a member of the Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir since 2009 in our Baritone section. Through his friendship with Geoff Hursthouse, Chairman, Mick has joined the “Our Dementia Choir” fronted by the Nottingham based actor, Vicky McClure. Danielle Smith is the assistant musical director of the choir and the daughter of Geoff and Lucy – there is the connection. Mick made his debut with the choir on 5th September 2023 at the National Television Awards staged in the London O2 Arena.
Mick is happy to mention that he has only the very early signs of dementia and thought it would be a great idea to go along. As a keen and valued member of our Baritone section he will no doubt be encouraging Justin in his membership.

End of Term and the Singing Riders

To coincide with the closure of the school year our choir tends to take a break in August. We mark the end of the year with a small celebration, a light buffet is provided through our Supporters’ Group by everyone bringing savory and sweet food, and of course, we have a good sing.
This year we gathered nominations for our favourite songs and these were organised by Lynden Lowe and Ian Grice into our top 10 – we really did enjoy the sing. Here are the top ten in reverse order.

Deus Salutis (Llef) David Charles, tr. Robert Davies, Welsh hymn tune (Llef) G.H. Jones, tr. Mansel Thomas
Gwahoddiad Ieuan Gwylit, Louis Hartsough, arr. John Tudor Davies

You Raise Me Up Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland, arr. Roger Emerson

Three of our choristers arrived on their motorcycles and scooters.
